The Iran War, in Maps
An ethnic, environmental, religious and sociological breakdown from an expert.
If you’re trying to make sense of the quickly spreading Iran war, I want to offer you insight from a dear friend, a regional expert, who grew up in war-torn Afghanistan and Pakistan. Josh Shahryar is a former journalist and a professor of religion who has lived in the U.S. since 2006. On Bluesky, he’s broken down some of the regional challenges and motivations behind the conflict — and he offers thoughts on who Iran’s and America’s allies are — in a deeply interesting ethnic, environmental, religious and sociological breakdown. Here’s his thread:

If I read these maps correctly, and I am not completely sure, it looks as though Trump has bitten off more than he can chew. It is quite obvious that his decision to wage war on Iran (even though they are trying very hard to say that this is NOT war) was taken with very little, if any, thought of long range planning or actual knowledge of the regional politics. BTW, Trump has announced that he must have input as to the next Irani leader! As though he actually owns Iran.
I think this is a key point: "He thinks that he is more important than actuality." Thank you!
