While I’ve been figuring out what goes where in my new West Coast home, I’ve begun looking through my photos to see if there are any I want to print and hang. Here are a bunch I’ve chosen — all are from reporting trips, with a couple of my hometown of New York City thrown in.

As a journalist who is often in far-flung places on my own, I’ve long relied on myself to take photos that can accompany my stories. A number of them have been published in The Guardian, The Atlantic and elsewhere.

It took me many years to call myself a photojournalist — and to actually charge for photos when they ran with my words — but I finally realized that my reporting involved more than writing, and that, hey, my photos weren’t half bad.

The first two photos here are of Syrian girls I met who were living in a broken-down concrete structure in Turkey, at the border of Syria. Their eyes have stayed with me for many years. Others are from Lampedusa, when I watched men who arrived by dingy from Africa waiting to be transported to mainland Europe. A few are of their abandoned boats. Many others are from my years of reporting in Congo on the rapes of little girls. Some are of the girls (without their faces). A particular favorite of mine shows Nobel Laureate Denis Mukwege at Panzi Hospital, exhausted, with his head in his hands. Another is of women dancing in the Brooklyn streets the day President Biden won.
